Jang Hyuk (nato Jeong Yong-jun il 20 dicembre 1976) è un attore sudcoreano. È meglio conosciuto per i suoi ruoli da protagonista nei film Volcano High (2001) e Windstruck (2004) e nei drammi televisivi Successful Story of a Bright Girl (2002), Thank You (2007), The Slave Hunters (2010), Deep Rooted Tree (2011), You Are My Destiny (2014), Voice (2017), Money Flower (2017) e The Swordsman (2020).
Carriera
1997–2001: inizi e ascesa alla fama
Jang Yong-jun ha trascorso la maggior parte della sua infanzia e adolescenza nella sua città natale, Busan, prima di fare il suo debutto come attore nel 1997 nel dramma televisivo Model con il suo nome d'arte Jang hyuk.
Oltre alla serie per adolescenti School e a un ruolo minore nel film poco visto Zzang (The Best), Jang è apparso nel video musicale di "To Mother", il singolo di debutto del 1999 della popolare boyband god, con la quale era coinquilino in quel momento.[2][3]
Sempre nel 1999, ha interpretato il generoso ma aggressivo Myung-ha nella serie Into the Sunlight.[4] Usando il nome d'arte "TJ", ha avuto una breve carriera come rapper e ha recitato in diversi video musicali dal suo album rap TJ Project, che è stato pubblicato nel 2000.[5]
La carriera di Jang ha iniziato a decollare per la prima volta nel 2001, quando è stato scelto per il ruolo principale in Volcano High con l'attrice Shin Min-a.
La sua recitazione nel ruolo eccentrico è stata elogiata da fan e critici.[6][7]
2002–2004: popolarità e polemiche mainstream
Nel 2002 ha continuato a farsi un nome, recitando nel film di successo Jungle Juice,[8] che ha raggiunto la vetta del botteghino settimanale.
La sua popolarità ha continuato ad aumentare quando ha recitato nel famosissimo dramma televisivo Successful Story of a Bright Girl con l'attrice Jang Na-ra.[9][10]
Ha anche avuto un ruolo in Public Toilet, la coproduzione HK-Corea dell'acclamato regista di Hong Kong Fruit Chan, che ha vinto una Menzione Speciale nella sezione Upstream della Mostra del Cinema di Venezia del 2002.[11]
Jang ha continuato ad apparire in progetti di alto profilo; nel 2003, Jang ha recitato al fianco di Lee Na-young nella commedia Please Teach Me English,[12] del regista Kim Sung-su e l'anno successivo, ha recitato al fianco di Jun Ji-hyun in Windstruck di Kwak Jae-yong.[13]
Sebbene Windstruck non sia stato generalmente ben accolto in Corea, ha continuato a battere Shiri ed è diventato uno dei film coreani più venduti in Giappone.[14]
Alla fine del 2004, insieme ai colleghi attori Song Seung-heon e Han Jae-suk, si scoprì che Jang aveva evitato illegalmente il servizio militare obbligatorio attraverso l'agenzia SidusHQ sua e di Han.[7][15]

2006–2009: Rinascita di carriera e collaborazioni internazionali
Dopo il suo congedo dall'esercito nel 2006,[18] Jang è tornato nella serie drammatica Thank You.[19]
Una storia commovente su una giovane madre single (interpretata da Gong Hyo-jin) con una figlia sieropositiva e il medico cinico che entra nelle loro vite, Thank You è diventato sorprendentemente un modesto successo, e con esso Jang ha lasciato lo stigma dello scandalo dietro di lui.
Ha poi firmato per la produzione cinematografica internazionale Dance of the Dragon (2008), una storia d'amore che ha mescolato il ballo da sala con l'azione di arti marziali e ha recitato insieme all'attrice singaporiana Fann Wong.[20][21]
Ha vinto il premio come miglior attore all'inaugurale West Hollywood International Film Festival per il suo ruolo.[22][23]
Jang ha anche fatto un cameo nel dramma giapponese Ryokiteki na Kanojo, un remake del film coreano del 2001 My Sassy Girl.
Dopo la sua precedente partecipazione al talk show della star Tsuyoshi Kusanagi, il regista del dramma avrebbe aggiunto nuove scene per Jang che non erano state incluse nella sceneggiatura originale.[24]
Jang è poi apparso come l'interesse amoroso in tre video musicali della cantante taiwanese Elva Hsiao.[25]
Seguirono altri ruoli da protagonista in fiction televisive, tra cui Robber (2008) e Tazza (2008) adattati dal manhwa del gioco d'azzardo.[26][27]
Nel 2009, è apparso nel cortometraggio His Concern nell'omnibus Five Senses of Eros,[28] nel thriller audace Alla ricerca dell'elefante[29] e nel melodramma Maybe.[30][31]
2010–2013: plauso della critica e continuo successo
Nel 2010, ha ricevuto le migliori recensioni della sua carriera per il suo ruolo da protagonista come il cacciatore di schiavi ("chuno") Dae-gil nel film drammatico di successo The Slave Hunters.[32][33]
Il suo insegnante di recitazione per 14 anni ha descritto Jang come implacabile nella sua analisi di un personaggio.
Secondo Jang, "È facile fallire se non capisci i passi da fare per essere famoso". 34]
Ha vinto numerosi premi per la recitazione, in particolare il Grand Prize ("Daesang") ai KBS Drama Awards e una nomination come miglior attore agli International Emmy Awards 2011.[36][37][38]
Nello stesso anno, ha recitato in Fall in Love with Anchor Beauty, il remake cinese del dramma coreano del 2000 All About Eve.[39]
Fall in Love with Anchor Beauty ha ricevuto valutazioni elevate in Cina durante la sua corsa.[40]
Tornato in Corea, Jang ha interpretato un gestore di fondi diventato avvocato in Midas del 2011, interpretato anche da Lee Min-jung e Kim Hee-ae.[41][42] Successivamente ha recitato nel thriller legale The Client (2011) con Ha Jung-woo e Park Hee-soon, dicendo che il film ha soddisfatto il suo desiderio di interpretare un personaggio emotivamente più complesso.
Nel ruolo di un uomo accusato di aver ucciso sua moglie, Jang ha detto che doveva trovare "il giusto equilibrio" "come qualcuno che può apparire a volte come un criminale o altre volte come un innocente".[43]
Inizialmente riluttante a firmare per il dramma in costume Deep Rooted Tree (2011) perché trovava poco interessante il ruolo della guardia reale di basso livello Kang Chae-yoon nel romanzo originale, Jang ha cambiato idea dopo aver letto che il personaggio era stato drammatizzato e reso più ricco nella sceneggiatura televisiva.
Racconta la storia di Kang che indaga su un caso che coinvolge gli omicidi seriali di studiosi Jiphyeonjeon nel palazzo Gyeongbok mentre il re Sejong (interpretato da Han Suk-kyu) sta sviluppando l'alfabeto coreano.[44][45]
Nel 2013, è stato il protagonista di Iris II, il sequel della serie d'azione di spionaggio del 2009.[46][47][48][49]
Questa è stata la sua terza collaborazione come attore con l'attrice Lee Da-hae, dopo Robber e The Slave Hunters.[50][51]
È anche tornato sul grande schermo nel film catastrofico di successo del 2013 The Flu, in cui lui e Soo Ae interpretavano un pompiere e un dottore che gareggiavano contro il tempo per trovare la cura per un ceppo mortale del virus del raffreddore.[52][53]
Con sorpresa di molti, dato il suo scandalo passato per evitare la leva, si è poi unito a Real Men, uno spettacolo settimanale in cui sei celebrità maschili vengono filmate in stile documentario mentre entrano nel campo di addestramento dell'esercito.

Ha detto: "Vorrei sfruttare questa opportunità per riflettere su me stesso attraverso Real Men e per rivivere la vita dell'esercito".[54]
È apparso in Real Men da giugno 2013 a febbraio 2014.[55]
Ha poi scritto una raccolta di saggi sulle sue esperienze di vita intitolata Jang Hyuk, Hot-Blooded Man, pubblicata il 6 agosto 2013.[56][57]
2014-presente
Nel 2014, si è riunito con il regista di Volcano High Kim Tae-kyun in Innocent Thing, un thriller su una liceale che diventa ossessionata dal suo insegnante di ginnastica sposato.[58][59]
Ha anche collaborato di nuovo con la co-protagonista di Successful Story of a Bright Girl Jang Na-ra in You Are My Destiny, un remake coreano del dramma taiwanese del 2008 dal titolo simile.[60][61][62]
Poco dopo, lui e Jang hanno recitato insieme per la terza volta in Old Farewell, su un pugile che viaggia nel passato e ritrova la moglie recentemente scomparsa.
Faceva parte dell'antologia di un singolo episodio Drama Festival e diretto da uno dei loro registi in Fated.[63]
Nel 2015, Jang è tornato nell'ambiente dei drammi storici con Shine or Go Crazy, una storia d'amore di fantasia tra un principe Goryeo maledetto e l'ultima principessa di Balhae.[64]
Seguì il film Empire of Lust, in cui interpretava l'astuto e ambizioso Yi Bang-won che lanciò un colpo di stato per diventare il re di Joseon.[65][66]
Successivamente è stato scelto per il film cinese Inside or Outside, un giallo poliziesco con Simon Yam e Wallace Huo.[67]
Jang ha poi interpretato un locandiere Joseon in The Merchant: Gaekju 2015.[68]
Nel 2016, Jang è stato scritturato nel film drammatico cinese New Sea.[69] Tornato in Corea, Jang ha recitato nel dramma medico della KBS Beautiful Mind, interpretando un neurochirurgo geniale.[70]
Sebbene il dramma sia stato elogiato dalla critica, il numero di episodi è stato ridotto da 16 a 14 a causa delle basse valutazioni degli spettatori.[71]
Nel 2017, ha recitato nel suo primo film drammatico via cavo, il thriller poliziesco Voice di OCN, dove ha interpretato un ex detective che si è unito alla squadra di un call center per rintracciare l'assassino di sua moglie.[72][73]
Voice è diventato un successo e le sue valutazioni hanno battuto i record dei drammi di OCN quando è stato trasmesso in Corea.[74]
Il suo film Ordinary Person al fianco di Son Hyun-joo è uscito nel marzo 2017, dove ha agito come un manipolatore capo della National Planning Security.[75][76] Ha anche recitato nel film drammatico Money Flower,[77] ottenendo molti consensi e una nomination ai Baeksang Arts Awards come miglior attore per il suo ruolo di avvocato in cerca di vendetta.[78]
Lo stesso anno, è stato scelto per il film d'azione The Swordsman.[79]
Nel 2018, Jang è tornato sul piccolo schermo con la commedia romantica di SBS Wok of Love, nel ruolo di un ex gangster diventato proprietario di un ristorante; e il melodramma d'azione di MBC Bad Papa, nel ruolo di un ex pugile campione che scegli di diventare un uomo cattivo per poi diventare un buon padre.[81]
Nel 2019, ha preso parte al programma televisivo di realtà Urban Cops in cui le celebrità si alleano con poliziotti nella vita reale per risolvere i crimini in città.[82]
Lo stesso anno, è stato scelto per il dramma storico My Country, nel ruolo di Yi Bang-won.[83]
Nel 2020, Jang ha recitato come un profiler geniale nel dramma OCN Tell Me What You Saw.[84]
Il suo film The Swordsman è uscito nel settembre 2020.
Lo stesso anno ha preso parte al programma televisivo di realtà Yacht Expedition: The Beginning.
Nel 2021, Jang ha preso parte al programma televisivo di varietà di sopravvivenza all'aperto Law of the Jungle-Pioneers e al programma di cucina National Bang Bang Cook Cook.
Il suo film noir Tomb of the River è uscito nel novembre 2021.
Nel 2022, Jang è tornato sul piccolo schermo con il dramma storico di KBS2 Bloody Heart, interpretando il primo vicepremier e un simbolo vivente di potere e una figura a cui tutti obbediscono.[85]
Il suo film The Killer: A Girl Who Deserves to Die è stato presentato in anteprima mondiale all'Udinese Far East Film Festival nell'aprile 2022, ha tenuto una prima sul tappeto rosso a Los Angeles nel giugno 2022 ed è uscito contemporaneamente sui grandi schermi in Corea del Sud e Nord America su 13 luglio.
Ha anche vinto il premio Daniel A. Craft per l'eccellenza nel cinema d'azione al 21° Festival del cinema asiatico di New York.
Vita privata
Jang ha iniziato a frequentare la sua ragazza, Kim Yeo-jin, nel 2002.
Si sono incontrati in un fitness club, dove Kim era il suo istruttore di Pilates. Il matrimonio della coppia è stato registrato nel gennaio 2008 e la cerimonia si è tenuta a giugno.[86]
I suoi amici più cari, il cantante Kim Jong-kook e l'attore Cha Tae-hyun, hanno partecipato alla cerimonia di matrimonio.[87]
La coppia ha due figli e una figlia, nati rispettivamente nel febbraio 2008, novembre 2009 e aprile 2015.[88][89]
Jang pratica il Jeet Kune Do da più di 10 anni ed è un ex atleta professionista di Taekwondo.[90]
